Expansion Engine

Expansion Engines offered are offered in different finish options including as vertical, single acting, triple expansion engine, reciprocating type and perfectly match up with the working requirements of industrial plants. These are made available with three major units comprising cylinders unit, hydraulic systems and drive unit with the engines making use of dry and carbon dioxide free air. It works by producing cold required for plant with high- pressure air entering through inlet valve at start of downward stroke of piston with inlet valve closing on further downward motion leading to expansion of entrapped air.

 

Working Features:

 

  • Upward stroke allows outlet valve to remain open while inlet valve remains in closed position
  • In downward stroke air enters cylinder and expands with the upward stroke leading to expanded air being pushed outside
  • Support of electric motor to start the machine post which engine moves by air pressure itself its motor retains speed by acting as brake
  • As work is done by air in rotating flywheel, it loses its heat content (enthalpy) that makes the air cooled
  • Cooling achieved is more than that of expansion in an expansion valve
  • Making use of dry and carbon dioxide free air that allows approx. temperature drop across expansion engine to 50 to 70°C (depending on inlet air pressure, temperature and inlet cam position variables)

  • The drive unit
  • The cylinder unit for Air expansion
  • The Hydraulic system for operating the valves

 

Drive unit -  

 

  • Drive unit similar to any reciprocating machine with usual parts like crank case, crankshaft, connecting rod, cross head and others
  • Expansion Engine has extended crankshaft that allows accommodation of cam box
  • Moving parts are lubricated through hole in crankshaft
  • Oil scrapper rings provided to prevent oil escape to cylinder unit

 

Cylinder unit –

 

  • Cylinder unit handling process air consists of cylinder, piston, inlet and outlet Isolation Valve Assemblies
  • Ball valves actuated mechanically by Push Rod as per timing transmitted by cam
  • Push Rods are housed in stuffing box to avoid Air leakage and are actuated by the hydraulic system

 

Hydraulic system –

 

Work s as control system

Hydraulic oil is fed by a pump to –

  • Pressurized oil container for valve actuation
  • Lubricate crankshaft and drive and drive unit parts
  • Lubricate the rolled holders
